VERSE

I walked in late, head hanging low

But coffee was hot, the lights cast a glow

A circle of strangers, eyes full of grace

And a chair left open like it was my place

PRE-CHORUS

They said, really, have we seen one fail?

Who sees the path and sticks to the trail

But half of the truth won't get you clean

You gotta let go if you wanna be free

CHORUS

You wanna be free

Half measures availed us nothing

We stood there looking a hell of a common

Asked for care with all abandon

Trust and a greater understanding

That's how it works

If you're honest when it hurts

And yeah, it hurts

VERSE

Tried controlling what I couldn't explain

Thought my will could fix all my hurt, my shame

Oh, the shame, the shame

But booze had a grip like the devil's hand

And lies were walls against a life I planned

Made that list, oh, the ones

I'd hurt

Read my sins till my vision blurred

But the day admitting my heart was numb

So numb, so numb

Was the first step to who

I've become

Now I carry a message one night at a time

To the lost and the lonely in that same old line

Some come back broke and some still deny

But folks look different when ones nearly die

The new ones shake, afraid to speak

Just nod and slide them coffee in a seat

Hear them say, not sure I belong in this place

Just smile and say, baby stay

BRIDGE

Feel God's grace

Baby feel, baby feel

God's grace His grace

His grace It

VERSE

ain't done by will, ain't done with pride

It's through surrender we've stayed alive

If you got to crawl or get down and kneel

Just come as you are

And let's start to heal

Some days I still hear whispers

Inside a drink won't hurt

It'll be fine this time

But I've buried friends thinking that way

And I ain't going back to living in the dark

So I pick up the phone and try step ten

Make peace with the past and start again

BRIDGE

This ain't a race, no race, no race, no race

It's walking through fire, fire, fire

Staying clean with truth, not my desires

Not my desires, now promises come slow but true

In coffee and laughter and skies are blue

I don't preach or push, I just show up

Hold space for the broken, helping fill their cups

Don't need my name carved in stone

Just a place in a circle where

I'm not alone

VERSE

One day at a time, learning to stand

Not standing solo

Just being one of the band

CHORUS

Half measures availed us nothing

We stand right here holding

Something, something, something

Asking for care with complete abandon and trusting

The one with all understanding

That's how it works

How it works, how it works, how it works

When you open your heart

That's how it works, works, works

For those honest

Those honest From the start

OUTRO

We share our stories, not our names

Not our names

Live in the promises

And trust in the one with all understanding

That's how it works

How it works

When you're honest, honest when it hurts

How would you rate this song?
